types of frame on BMX
Flatland
Variety of freestyle riding performed on flat ground as opposed to ramps.
High-Tensile
Steel Less-expensive, heavier form of steel frame material, often found in lower-priced bicycles.
Freestyle
Trick-oriented riding with specialized frame and component designs. Flatland (as the name implies) and vert (on wooden ramps, often shaped like half-pipes) are the two subcategories of freestyle bicycling.
Gussett
Frame reinforcement, generally welded on at high-stress joints.
Pegs
Cylindrical attachments on a BMX bike’s axles used for grinding on ramps and rails and also for standing on for a variety of freestyle tricks.
Threadless
A threadless fork has a smooth, unthreaded top (known as a steerer tube) that allows handlebar stems to be changed more easily than older, threaded forks permitted. Most modern bicycles offer threadless forks, which don’t offer major performance enhancements, but are welcome for those who like to do mechanical work on their bikes themselves.
Vert
Short for vertical, referring to the vertical tops of trick ramps.

more maintenance coming soonTaking off old grips and putting new grips on your bike is about as basic as you can get when it comes to bike maintenance. However, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you do the job quicker so you can get back out there riding again. Here’s a few of our favorite ways to get’r done…There are about a million and a half (give or take) ways to install grips on a bike, so if you have your own method that you like, that’s fine. Hell, your way may even work better for some people than ours, so go ahead and post it in the comments below. With that said, here’s how we do it.Some other ways to get grips onto bars are:
- Using an air compressor with a narrow tip to blast the grip onto the bar. This is popular in bike shops where air compressors are common.
- Spraying a small amount of hair spray in the grip and quickly putting it on the bar. The liquid makes it slide on easily. Then when it dries, the hairspray helps the grip stick better so you never get throttle grip.
- Using ultra-sonic brain waves to telepathically command the grip to jump onto the grip. For this you have to be pro though with at least seven sponsors.
If your bars slip, they might be stripped or damaged. Take them off and clean the clamping section on the bars and stem. You might also want to take a file and make knurls on the clamping area. If the clamp bar is crushed then the bars are toast and you need to get some new ones.
